What is gel polish?
Gel polish (also known as Shellac polish) is a specially formulated polish that goes on just like regular polish, however it is immediately cured using a UV or LED lamp so that it dries right away.
It typically consists of an initial clear coat, two coats of colored polish, and finally a top coat.
Since gel polish dries immediately, clients don't need to worry about smudging or chipping their new manicures right away. It's not a type of artificial nail, so there are no harmful side effects like acrylic nails (see below). Gel polish does not make your nails grow, but it does protect them as they grow under the polish. This allows for a smooth, long growth under the polish. Removal of gel polish is done by soaking the nail with acetone, then gently pushing off the old polish.
Best of all - it lasts two weeks or more!
*For in salon services, a special steam-off machine is used to remove the gel polish -- the latest in nail technology.
Why do you not do Acrylic nails?
The process for applying acrylic nails ruins your natural nails and nail beds. It typically includes filing the nail with electric drill which damages and thins out your nail beds. It can take years for your nails to build themselves back to their natural thickness and strength. Additionally, the chemicals are very bad for your health and the fumes are horrible for both the client and the manicurist.
Furthermore, acrylic nails can be thick and unnatural looking on your hands. Upkeep needs to be constant to prevent lifting, which then causes moisture to get in under the acrylic and that is how clients can end up with fungus, infections, and quite possibly the loss of your natural nails overall. You will then need medical attention so it does not spread.
How do you sanitize your instruments for clients?
All implements that are used on the client that are not sanitizable are given to the client to keep or they are disposed.
Pedicures are done out of a bowl for a more sanitary service. Best way for pedicures :)
Pedicure spa chairs are dangerous if not properly disinfected. Please visit this link for all the information about pedicure spa chairs, and why I don't use them! http://confessionsofacosmetologist.com/2012/02/13/the-truth-about-pedicures/
